For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Joseph. Today, I would like to share a short testimony as to what has brought me to Christianity. I was born here in NYC, raised in the South Bronx where it is “survival of the the fittest” and who has the most street knowledge. I learned about life and death at an early age. By the time I was 10, I believe I had more life experiences than a 25 year old man. Growing up there was rough and dangerous. But ironically, I can truly say that I had the best of friends and the most fun as a kid.
Though I was raised Roman Catholic and went to the best private catholic schools here in the city, I always knew about God and the faith and being saved. However, I never truly accepted and believed in the faith. So, I went on to unchristian like behavior like being impatient, having a bad temper, street racing, hanging out, fighting. I got so out of control, I was stabbed during a fight, and shot after another fight. Even after a severe motorcycle injury, I still never thanked God for saving me after cheating death so many times. I used to think I was just lucky.
What brought me to Christianity wasn’t an illness or a near-death experience. It was someone who loves me and cares about me with all of her heart and wanted to see me saved. It was someone who knows that with Christ in my life, I would not just be a good Christian but a good person, husband, and father as well.
She asked me to go to church so may times, but I always refused. I often dropped her off at the front door of the church. One day, she asked me to come and try. I agreed, thinking “If she is happy, then I am happy.” Honestly, I felt odd being the only dark-skinned person here, attending church with people from a different culture. As I continued to attend, those feelings vanished. Now, I have an extended family of friends in life and Christianity.
Where I am now, I am in a great place with God in my life. I am more patient, more forgiving and understanding. I’m more giving and caring. God has made me an all around good person. in all aspects of my life. I know now that my survival wasn’t just luck. God saved me so many times. He has a plan for me. I believe He will guide me to what it is when the time is right as long as I stay in the faith.
Jeremiah 29:11 says, ” For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
Now, I am newly baptized and have accepted Christ in my life, I hope to be living water.
John 7:48 says “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'”
In Jesus’s Name we pray,
